FULL TEXT REVIEWED (born-digital, open access CC-BY). Geochemistry/petrography of hydrothermal mineralization in Chitral, plus a Geology-and-Stratigraphy-of-Chitral review dividing the region into Karakoram Plate and Kohistan Island Arc (after Gaetani et al. 1995). Karakoram Plate units (N-S): Wakhan Formation (+Atark carbonate) - Awireth/Owir Series - Sarikol Shale - Shogram Formation - Shoghore Ls/Reshun. Kohistan-arc units: Drosh, Purit, Gawuch Formations. Plutons: Tirch Mir (115+/-4 Ma Rb-Sr biotite), Buni-Zom, Kafiristan, Garam Chashma. Supports adding Wakhan Formation, Chitral Slate and Sarikol Shale; corroborates Shogram, Reshun, Drosh, Purit, Gawuch, Owir, Atark. Descriptions ultimately after Hayden (1915), Tipper (1924), Desio (1959/1963/1966), Stauffer (1975), Buchroithner & Gamerith (1986).

- Paleozoic Chitral SlateAgeEraLithologyType localityDescription
- Lithology: Mujtaba et al. (2024): the Chitral Slates are fine-grained black slates with subordinate dark grey phyllite, quartzite and limestone/marble layers (dark grey-black, medium-grained, recrystallised); Palaeozoic (likely Late Palaeozoic), correlated with the Darkot Group of the Gilgit Agency (Stauffer 1975).
- AgeEraPeriodLithologyType localityFossilsDescription
- Age: Mujtaba et al. (2024) (after Hayden 1915; Tipper 1924): the Sarikol Shale, named after the Sarikol Range, extends from Chinese Turkistan to Chitral — predominantly slates with occasional quartzite and limestone beds, notably fossiliferous with nautiloids indicating a Devonian age; well exposed near Shogram village (black shale and slate with minor limestone).
- Paleozoic Wakhan Formation
- Age: Mujtaba et al. (2024): the Wakhan Formation (Karakoram Plate, northernmost NSB unit; Hayden 1915) is dark grey homogeneous slate, siltstone and quartzite with occasional calcareous schists, grading N into gneiss and faulted against the Atark carbonate body; attributed to the Early Triassic with possible extension into the Late Permian (Kafarskiy 1976).
