Accessibility statement

Pakistan Stratigraphy Explorer is meant to be a reference anyone can use — including people who browse with a keyboard, a screen reader, magnification, or a preference for reduced motion. We are committed to keeping it accessible, and we treat accessibility barriers as bugs to be fixed.

Our target

We aim to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA across the site, and we test against it as part of our build. Accessibility is treated as ongoing work rather than a one-time checkbox — see our public accessibility plan for what is done and what is in progress.

What’s supported

Keyboard

Every link, button, filter and toggle is reachable and operable with the keyboard alone, in a logical order, with a visible focus outline.

Screen readers

Built and tested for VoiceOver, NVDA and TalkBack — landmarks, headings, labels and live announcements so the site makes sense read aloud.

Colour & contrast

Text meets WCAG AA contrast in both light and dark themes; the geological era colours are never the only way information is shown.

Dark mode & reduced motion

A light and a dark theme, and animations are minimised automatically when your system requests reduced motion.

Resizable text & reflow

The layout reflows without loss of content when text is enlarged or the window is narrow, down to small screens.

Works without JavaScript

The core content — every formation, province and the time scale — is real HTML, readable even if scripts do not run.

Known limitations

We are honest about where we are not there yet:

The interactive map is a visual aid. The same information is provided as a full, keyboard-and-screen-reader-friendly basin → province → formation index directly below it, which is the primary path for non-visual use.
A number of units are still under review; those are clearly labelled as unverified rather than presented as settled.
