Three ways to slice the record

Before the names make sense, it helps to know that geologists describe rocks in more than one way at once. Lithostratigraphy divides rock by its physical character — what it is made of. Chronostratigraphy divides it by age — when it formed. Biostratigraphy divides it by the fossils it contains. A single outcrop belongs to all three systems simultaneously: a limestone (lithostratigraphy) of Eocene age (chronostratigraphy) carrying a particular fauna of foraminifera (biostratigraphy).

Formation names belong to the first of these. They describe bodies of rock, defined by their lithology and their position — deliberately kept separate from questions of exact age.

The formation: the fundamental unit

The formation is the basic building block of lithostratigraphy. It is a distinctive body of rock — a limestone, a shale, a sandstone, or a characteristic mixture — that is extensive and consistent enough to be shown on a geological map. That “mappable” test is the heart of it: a formation must be traceable across the landscape, with recognisable upper and lower boundaries.

By convention a formation is named for a geographic place plus either its dominant rock type or the neutral word “Formation” — hence the Sakesar Limestone, the Warchha Sandstone, the Chorgali Formation. The place-name fixes the unit to a real, revisitable location.

Members, beds, groups and supergroups

Formations can be subdivided and combined. A member is a named part of a formation with its own recognisable character, but not mapped separately at the same scale. A bed is a still smaller, individually distinctive layer. Going the other way, two or more associated formations that share features are bundled into a group — the Siwalik Group is a familiar example — and groups in turn into a supergroup. This nested hierarchy lets geologists talk at whatever scale a problem requires, from a single marker bed to an entire basin fill.

The type locality: an anchor in the real world

Every formal unit is tied to a type locality (or a type section) — the specific place where it is defined and against which all other occurrences are compared. The type section is the reference: if a geologist elsewhere is unsure whether the rock in front of them is “the Patala Formation,” the answer is settled by comparison with its defining section. This is why the dataset records a type locality wherever the literature provides one; it is what makes a name testable rather than merely traditional.

Who governs the names

Because consistency matters, stratigraphic naming follows published codes, and in Pakistan the names are compiled and curated in the national stratigraphic literature — the work of the Stratigraphic Committee of Pakistan and the memoirs of the Geological Survey. These lexicons gather formation names, their ages, lithologies and type localities, province by province, so that everyone is using the same vocabulary.

Why names change

Stratigraphic names are not fixed forever. A unit may be redefined, split, merged, promoted from member to formation, or abandoned as new mapping, fossils and dating refine the picture. That churn is not a flaw; it is the science working. This site records such changes as source-attributed revision notes rather than silently overwriting older usage, so the reasoning stays visible.
