Fossil group

Belemnites

Molluscs · Triassic – Cretaceous

Extinct, squid-like cephalopods known mainly from their solid, bullet-shaped internal skeletons (guards), which are common Mesozoic fossils. They hunted in open Jurassic and Cretaceous seas and, like ammonites, largely died out at the end of the Cretaceous.

A broad fossil group rather than a single taxon — the units below record it among their fauna or flora.
