Marine "lamp shells" — shelled invertebrates that resemble clams but have two unequal valves and a distinctive filter-feeding organ, the lophophore. Most lived fixed to the sea floor by a fleshy stalk; they dominated Palaeozoic sea beds and are far less common today.
