A buried Precambrian basement high (horst) beneath the Punjab Platform between the Potwar and Sulaiman basins, whose only surface expression is the Kirana Hills.

Buried basement high (horst) between the Potwar and Sulaiman basins. Known from geophysical surveys and rare drill core data. The Kirana Hills are surface expression of this buried ridge. Controls petroleum migration and trapping in the Punjab Platform.

Economic significance

Controls petroleum migration pathways in Punjab Platform

Remarks

A basement ridge separating major depocentres of the Indus foreland; the Kirana Hills inselbergs are its surface expression, exposing Neoproterozoic Indian-shield basement. It exerts an important control on petroleum migration and trapping on the Punjab Platform.

Every fact on this page is source-cited. This entry is part of the peer-archived Pakistan Stratigraphy Dataset (doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.21363991, CC‑BY‑4.0).

Lexicon status: Appears in a single-author Geological Survey of Pakistan memoir (Malkani & Mahmood 2017), not cross-confirmed against the Shah lexicon. The Stratigraphic Committee of Pakistan is largely inactive, so documented provenance — not formal ratification — is the available signal.
