The Jurassic Surghar Group — the Datta (fire-clay and glass-sand), Shinawari and Samana Suk formations — spanning river plains to shallow Jurassic seas.

Named by Shah (1980) after the Surghar Range, the Surghar Group as used here comprises the Jurassic Datta, Shinawari and Samana Suk formations (the Cretaceous units of Shah's original five-formation group are placed in a separate group). The basal Datta Formation (Danilchik, 1961) is terrestrial sandstone, shale and fire clay of Early Jurassic age; the Shinawari Formation (Fatmi, 1977) is alternating marl, shale and limestone with an Early–Middle Jurassic fauna; and the Samana Suk Formation (Davies, 1930) is bedded limestone.

Economic significance

The Datta Formation is Pakistan's main source of refractory fire-clay and glass/silica sand; the Samana Suk Limestone is a building stone.

Remarks

The Jurassic succession of the Surghar, Salt Range and Trans-Indus ranges, comprising the Datta, Shinawari and Samana Suk formations; records the terrestrial-to-marine Jurassic of the Indian-plate margin, with economically important Datta fire-clay and glass sand.
